Fixes that Fail.

Misfits
00 · the misfit synopsis

Synopsis.

Name

Fixes that Fail. A problem flares and a fix is applied that works, at once and unmistakably ... but the fix has a second effect, slow to arrive and hard to trace, that feeds the very problem it relieved, so the trouble returns, worse, and is met with more of the same fix, which relieves it again and worsens it again, faster, until the cure and the disease are the same act and no one suspects it, because the fix so plainly works.

Arc

The bend is this: the fix is the cause, and its success is what hides it. It runs on two effects of one act, on different clocks. The first effect is relief: the fix eases the symptom now, visibly, reliably, so it earns trust the instant it is applied. The second effect is a side effect: the same fix, through a longer loop, feeds the problem, and this arrives late and tangled with everything else, so it is never laid at the fix's door. Between the fast relief and the slow backfire sits a delay, and in that gap the fix looks like pure remedy. None of it is folly. The fixer is right that the fix works, the one it relieves is right to want it, and when the problem returns worse the natural reading is not that the fix caused it but that there was not enough fix, so more is applied, and the loop that was turning slowly begins to spin. The relief shortens, the backfire deepens, and the reach for the fix becomes reflex, each dose buying less and costing more, the trouble compounding under a remedy no one will question because it so obviously helps. Let the fix go, bear the symptom long enough for the loop to unwind, and address the cause the fix was hiding, and the problem can finally fall: but the fix really did work, letting it go means choosing the pain now for a gain that comes late and unpromised, and the fix is right there.

Stakes

Whether a problem is ever traced to its cause, or only ever met with the thing that is feeding it. Every plot but the last moves the same way: toward the fix, which relieves the symptom now, and away from the cause, which the relief keeps hidden. The production cannot make a delayed side effect announce itself, so the fix looks like pure remedy right up to the point where the trouble it causes is unmistakable, by which time the reach for it is habit. It can only show that no one was reckless, that the fix truly worked and the worse return truly looked like too little fix, and that the one thing that would break the loop, letting the fix go and bearing the symptom while the cause is faced, asks a certain pain now for an uncertain relief later, against a fix that is proven and immediate and right there.

Plots.

The Fix A problem flares and demands an answer now. The Fixer applies a fix that works at once, and the Relieved sees the symptom go and credits the fix. Closes when the relief is real and immediate, and the fix is trusted for it.

The Backfire Cue: after a delay, the fix's second effect arrives and feeds the problem. The Heir inherits a symptom returned worse, and the Diagnostician sees that the fix, not chance, is what deepened it. Closes when the trouble is worse than before and the cause is the cure.

The Escalation Cue: the problem is back and worse, and the fix worked before. More of the same fix is applied, the loop spins faster, and the Diagnostician's warning that the fix is the cause is waved off as absurd. Closes when the reach for the fix is reflex and the compounding is underway.

The Letting Go Cue: someone moves to stop the fix, bear the symptom while the loop unwinds, and address the cause it was hiding. The Breaker forgoes the relief and holds through the worse-before-better. Closes when the loop is broken and the cause is reached ... or the symptom flares too hard, the fix is reached for again, and the cycle resumes.

02 · plot editorial

The Backfire.

Cue

The morning after, the relief faded and the symptom back, deeper than before. Some time has passed, no culprit is in the room, and the trouble has quietly grown.

Tension

The proof arrives, and arrives unreadable. The trouble is plainly worse, and the one who traces it says the fix is the cause, but the delay has severed the two, so the evidence anyone can see is a symptom that once dropped under the fix, and the evidence it takes patience to follow is a loop no one wants to believe. The natural reading is waiting: not too much fix, but too little.

03 · plot editorial

The Escalation.

Cue

The treadmill, the problem back and worse, and a fix that worked before. The reading is natural and wrong: a deeper trouble must mean too little of the remedy.

Tension

Everyone works harder, and the harder they work the worse it gets. The response looks like diligence: the trouble is worse, so more fix, applied with more urgency, and the sheer effort reads as control. That is the loop at speed, the reach for the remedy worn into reflex, each dose buying less and costing more, the one true warning dismissed as absurd beside a fix that keeps, however briefly, appearing to help.

04 · plot editorial

The Fix.

Cue

The emergency, a problem flaring and demanding an answer now. A fix is within reach that can make the symptom stop the moment it is applied.

Tension

The fix works, and its working is the whole of the trap. Nothing here is wrong: the symptom is real, the fix relieves it, the relief is earned and rewarded. That is the trap loading, a remedy proving itself by the plainest evidence there is, its second effect set silently running underneath, and no reason yet, none at all, to suspect that the thing that just helped will be the thing that hurts.

05 · plot editorial

The Letting Go.

Cue

The reckoning, where someone moves to stop the fix and face the cause it hid. The loop unwinds only if the fix stops, and stopping means the symptom flaring unrelieved.

Stage

The Breaker tables Let the Fix Go: stop the fix, bear the symptom while the loop falls quiet, and work the cause, so the fix that fails is answered at last. The relief is refused on purpose, the worse-before-better borne, and the cause the fix was hiding finally reachable in the unrelieved space.

Tension

The one move that works looks like negligence the entire time it is working. While the loop unwinds the symptom is loud and unhandled, so the Breaker is the one who took away the thing that helped, judged by a pain deliberately borne, and shows no result until, late, the cause gives way. It holds ... or the flare proves too sharp, the proven fix is right there, the hand reaches for it once more, and the loop resumes at the speed it left off.

07 · pitch editorial

It Works, Doesn't It.

Tenor

Practical, decisive, results-first. The problem is here, the fix works, so apply it and get on with the day. The voice of sensible action, spoken by people who can see the symptom go the moment the fix lands and quite reasonably conclude that a thing that works this well is the answer.

Undertow

Under the results, a fix quietly feeding the problem it relieves. The same act has a second effect, slow and hard to trace, that deepens the trouble, so the relief now and the harm later are the one gesture, and when the trouble returns worse it looks like too little fix, never too much. No one is reckless: they only reach for what works, and what works now is exactly what is making it worse.

Nerve

The feeling of a problem competently handled, the symptom gone, the metric green, the fix proven again, the loop turning underneath so slowly that the cure is never once suspected of being the cause.

Echo

After the run: a trouble compounded under a remedy no one will question, a reach for the fix worn into reflex, each dose buying less and costing more, and a cause left untouched behind the very thing that keeps relieving its symptom.

09 · persona editorial

The Breaker.

Projection

Steady, unpopular, willing to look like the problem. Sees that the loop unwinds only if the fix stops, and that stopping means the symptom flaring unrelieved. Prepared to hold through the worse-before-better for a cause that can only be reached with the fix out of the way.

Action

Forgoes the relief and holds the line. Stops the fix, lets the symptom return and not be answered, and turns the freed attention to the cause the fix kept hidden. Bears the pain of the unwinding long enough for the loop to fall quiet and the real problem to be worked.

Shadow

The one move that works looks like negligence the entire time it is working. While the loop unwinds the symptom is loud and unhandled, so the Breaker is the one who took away the thing that helped, judged by a pain deliberately borne, and shows no result until, late, the cause gives way. Not careless: the only one bearing the fix's true cost on purpose, and the easiest to blame for the flare the fix used to hide.

Tell

"Stop fixing it. Let it hurt, and let's find out why." The negligent-sounding sentence that is the only thing that breaks the loop.

10 · persona editorial

The Diagnostician.

Projection

Patient, systemic, unimpressed by the obvious. Follows the loop past the relief to the delayed effect, and sees the fix feeding the problem. Holds the unwelcome finding that the cure and the disease are the same act.

Action

Names the cause, and points it at the fix. Traces the worse return through the delay back to the remedy everyone trusts, and says the thing no one wants to hear. Warns that more fix will mean more trouble, and watches the warning waved off as absurd.

Shadow

Being right is no help, because the fix so plainly works. The relief is immediate and the backfire is buried in delay, so the evidence everyone can see says the fix is good and the evidence it takes patience to trace says it is the cause, and patience loses to a symptom that just went away. The one who understands the loop is the least able to stop it, indicting a remedy by its slow harm against its fast relief.

Tell

"The fix is what's making it worse. Look at the delay." The true diagnosis that sounds like nonsense next to a symptom the fix just cured.

11 · persona editorial

The Fixer.

Projection

Capable, decisive, trusted for results. Meets the problem with a fix that eases it fast, and is right there the moment it flares. Reads the immediate relief as proof the fix is the answer, because visibly it is.

Action

Applies the fix, and applies it again when the trouble returns. Sees the symptom go each time, credits the fix each time, and when it comes back worse, brings more of it. Turns the reach for the fix into reflex, faster with each cycle, never once suspecting his own hand.

Shadow

The fix he trusts is the loop he is feeding. The relief is real and the backfire is delayed and diffuse, so nothing ever points back to him, and the worse return reads as too little fix, so he escalates the very thing making it worse, in perfect good faith. Not a bungler: a competent hand whose proven remedy is the cause, hidden by how well it works.

Tell

"It works, doesn't it? Just do it again." The true report of the relief, and the sentence that spins the loop one turn faster.

12 · persona editorial

The Heir.

Projection

Later, downstream, holding the account when it comes due. The next quarter, the next shift, the next generation, arriving after the relief has faded. Receives a problem deeper than the one the fix was first aimed at, and no memory that the fix caused it.

Action

Foots the bill the delay deferred. Meets the compounded trouble the earlier relief bought, and must deal with a symptom now larger and a cause now buried under cycles of fix. Often reaches, in turn, for the same fix, having inherited the reflex along with the debt.

Shadow

The one who pays is not the one who chose, so the fix never meets its true cost. The relief was booked early and the backfire lands late on someone else, so each cycle looks worth it to whoever is fixing and ruinous only to whoever inherits, and the separation of the two is what lets the loop run. Not unlucky: structurally downstream, holding a bill the delay addressed to the future.

Tell

"How did it get this bad? We were handling it." The true bewilderment of the one who received the compounding and not the relief.

13 · persona editorial

The Relieved.

Projection

Pressured, grateful, watching the near-term number. Wants the symptom gone now, and gets it, and rewards whoever made it go. Judges the fix by the relief it can feel, on the clock it lives by.

Action

Rewards the relief and asks for it again. Praises the fix when the symptom drops, funds it, makes it policy, and expects it repeated whenever the trouble returns. Presses for more of the fix precisely as it begins to fail, because the relief is the only result it can see.

Shadow

Its demand for the visible relief is what keeps the fix in place. The near-term result is all that reaches it and the delayed backfire never does, so it pays for the relief and never the harm, and its pressure turns a fixer's reflex into an institution's policy. Not greedy: rationally buying the only outcome it can perceive, and funding the loop by doing so.

Tell

"Whatever you did last time, do it again." The reasonable demand that makes the failing fix the standing order.

15 · place editorial

The Emergency.

Shown

A problem demanding action now, and a fix within reach that answers it. The symptom loud, the clock running, and a remedy that makes it stop the moment it is applied.

Holds

The relief, and the trust it buys. Here the fix earns its reputation, because the symptom really does go, at once and visibly, so the place shows the fix at its most convincing and its second effect not at all.

Offers

Fast, dependable relief. Whatever the flare, the fix quiets it, and it works every time it is tried here, which is exactly why it will be tried every time.

Withheld

Any sight of the loop. The emergency shows only the relief and never the delayed effect that follows it, so the fix looks like pure remedy, and nothing in the room hints that the same hand is feeding the trouble it just calmed.

16 · place editorial

The Morning After.

Shown

The symptom back, and deeper than before, some time after the relief has faded. No obvious culprit in the room, only a trouble that has quietly grown while attention was elsewhere.

Holds

The backfire, landed at last. Here the fix's second effect comes due, far enough from the fix in time that no one connects them, so the place holds the harm and hides its author behind the delay.

Offers

A clear view of the worsening, to anyone who arrives now. The trouble is plainly deeper than it was, and the evidence of harm is real, so the morning after shows exactly how bad it has become.

Withheld

The line back to the fix. The delay has cut the effect from its cause, so the worsening looks like bad luck or fresh trouble rather than the remedy's own return, and the natural reading is that there was too little fix, not too much.

17 · place editorial

The Reckoning.

Shown

The fix set down, the symptom flaring unanswered, and the cause it hid brought into the open. A hard, quiet stretch where the relief is refused on purpose and the loop is left to unwind.

Holds

The worse-before-better, and the chance under it. Here the symptom is loud and unhandled while the loop falls quiet, and only in that unrelieved space can the cause be reached, so the place holds both the pain of the cure and the cure itself.

Offers

The one real exit from the loop. Stopping the fix is the sole move that lets the compounding unwind and the cause be worked, so the reckoning offers the only way the problem actually falls.

Withheld

Comfort, and any promise it will pay. The symptom is not relieved, the cure is slow, the result is late and unpromised, and the fix is right there the whole time, so the reckoning withholds every reassurance, and holds only if the pain is borne on faith.

18 · place editorial

The Treadmill.

Shown

The fix reapplied at a quickening pace, each dose larger, each interval shorter. Great effort spent, and the trouble not falling but deepening, the running faster and the ground going backward.

Holds

The escalation, in full motion. Here the worse return draws more fix and the more fix deepens the worse return, so the place holds the loop at speed, the reach for the remedy worn into reflex and the compounding underway.

Offers

The feeling of vigorous response. Everyone is working hard, the fix is being applied more than ever, and the sheer activity reads as control, so the treadmill offers the comfort of effort in place of the fact of progress.

Withheld

A way off that isn't stopping. The only exit is to step down and let the belt run out, which means bearing the flare unrelieved, so the treadmill withholds any escape that keeps the fix, and running harder only spins it faster.

20 · piece editorial

The Backfire.

Place

At the morning after, in the symptom returned worse. Where the fix's second effect comes due and deepens the trouble.

Load bearing

Without it the fix would be a mere shortcut, imperfect but harmless. With it the fix is self-defeating: the same act that eased the symptom feeds it through a longer loop, so the remedy is the cause and its success is what hides that, and the problem does not merely persist but worsens by being treated. The Backfire is load bearing because it is the reinforcing consequence that names the archetype (Senge; Forrester), the turn that makes the fix fail rather than just fall short, and the reason the cure and the disease are one act.

Apparent

Fresh trouble, or bad luck. Arriving late and unlinked, the worsening looks like a new problem or an unlucky turn, never the return of the fix, so the backfire wears any face but its own and points, if anywhere, at too little fix.

21 · piece editorial

The Delay.

Place

At the morning after, in the distance between act and harm. Where the effect arrives too far from the fix for anyone to connect them.

Load bearing

Without it the backfire would follow the fix at once and be caught in the act. With it the harm arrives late, severed in time from its cause, so no one lays the worsening at the fix's door, and the loop can run because its two halves never appear together. The Delay is load bearing because it is the feedback lag that makes the system counterintuitive (Forrester), the reason a fix's harm is never traced to the fix, and the exact gap in which a remedy gets to look like pure relief.

Apparent

Just the passage of time. Nothing about a delay announces that it is hiding a link, so the interval reads as ordinary and the later trouble as unrelated, and the separation of cause from effect passes for the simple fact that time has gone by.

Yearbook

Working through backfiring, the gap that protects the fix. It is the cover the loop needs: the Delay lets the backfire go untraced, so the worse return is read as fresh trouble and not the fix's own.

22 · piece editorial

The Escalation.

Place

At the treadmill, the fix reapplied faster and larger. Where each worse return draws more fix and each more fix deepens the return.

Load bearing

Without it a single backfire would be a lesson, and the fix would be dropped. With it the backfire is misread as a shortfall, so the response to the worsening is more of the thing causing it, and the loop tightens instead of teaching, the reach for the fix worn into reflex and the trouble compounding. The Escalation is load bearing because it is the reinforcing loop closing (Kim), the point where a slow trap becomes a fast one, and the reason a fix that fails is not abandoned but doubled, driven hardest exactly when it is doing the most harm.

Apparent

A vigorous, responsible response. Applying more of the fix as the problem worsens looks like taking the trouble seriously, so the escalation reads as diligence, and the mounting effort passes for control while the ground goes backward.

Yearbook

Driven by the fixer through escalating, grown from the backfire misread. It is the loop at speed: the Escalation compounds the trouble and hands the debt to the heir, each cycle costing more and buying less.

23 · piece editorial

The Fix.

Place

At the emergency, within reach and quick to work. Where the remedy is applied and the symptom stops.

Load bearing

Without it the symptom would simply have to be endured or its cause addressed. With it there is a fast, dependable answer that works at the surface and sets a second effect running beneath, so the fix is both the relief and, through a longer loop, the cause of the worsening. The Fix is load bearing because it is the symptomatic intervention at the centre of the archetype (Senge), the single act with two effects on two clocks, and the whole misfit is what happens when a remedy this reliable is also, slowly, the disease.

Apparent

The solution, plainly. Because it eases the symptom every time, it looks like exactly the right response, and nothing about the act on its face reveals the delayed effect that will follow, so the fix reads as pure remedy.

Yearbook

Applied by the fixer through fixing, the act the play turns on. It is the two-effect gesture: the Fix earns its trust through the relief and sets loose the backfire, relief and harm the one hand.

24 · piece editorial

The Fix that Fails.

Place

At the reckoning, where the fix is set down. And through the whole loop, in every relief that fed the trouble it eased.

Load bearing

Without it the misfit would be a heap of effects with no shape. With it the effects become one thing: the symptom, the fix, the relief, the delay, the backfire, and the escalation are facets of a single loop, in which a remedy relieves at the surface and feeds the problem beneath, and the only escape is to stop the fix and bear the symptom while the loop unwinds and the cause is faced. The Fix that Fails is load bearing because it is the whole finding (Senge) with its whole price attached: it holds the misfit together, and it holds that the remedy is a worse-before-better, a certain pain taken now against a late and unpromised gain, not a tweak that keeps the relief and loses the harm.

Apparent

Either a good fix undone by bad luck, or a call to never intervene. Seen from one side the trouble looks like a sound remedy spoiled by unrelated misfortune; from the other, like a warning that all fixes are traps; and both miss the point, that this fix worked and was the cause, and the cure is not paralysis but letting this one go to reach what it hid.

Yearbook

Answered by the breaker through forgoing, held whole by nobody. It is the play in a single piece: the Fix that Fails is what the fix becomes once its loop has turned, undone only by bearing the symptom long enough to reach the cause beneath it.

25 · piece editorial

The Relief.

Place

At the emergency, in the symptom's immediate drop. Where the fix proves itself the instant it lands.

Load bearing

Without it the fix would not be trusted, and the loop would never get its grip. With it the fix is confirmed by the plainest evidence, a symptom that visibly goes, so the relief is what makes the fix the natural reach next time and the reason the worse return reads as a call for more. The Relief is load bearing because it is the balancing loop's reward that reinforces the fix (Kim), the fast, felt success that outweighs a slow, diffuse harm in every judgement, and the very thing that keeps a failing remedy in good standing.

Apparent

Proof the fix is working. The symptom drops, so the fix must be right, and the relief is read as the whole result rather than the fast half of a two-part effect, which is precisely how it earns the trust the loop feeds on.

Yearbook

Felt by the relieved through fixing, grown from the fix it rewards. It is the trust the loop needs: the Relief is what makes the escalation feel sensible, more of a thing that so visibly helps.

26 · piece editorial

The Symptom.

Place

At the emergency, loud and on the clock. Where the trouble presents and something must be done at once.

Load bearing

Without it there would be no reason to reach for the fix, and no loop to start. With it there is urgency: a problem that hurts now and will not wait, so the fastest answer wins by simply being able to arrive in time, and the fix is reached for because the symptom cannot be left alone. The Symptom is load bearing because it is the pressure the whole archetype runs on (Meadows), the demand for relief that makes a fast fix irresistible and a slow cause easy to defer, and it is the thing the fix relieves at the surface while the cause goes untouched beneath.

Apparent

The problem itself, simply. It looks like the whole of what is wrong, so relieving it looks like solving it, and the distinction between the symptom on the surface and the cause underneath is exactly what the urgency erases.

Yearbook

Borne at the emergency, the pressure the play opens on. It is the flare that starts everything: the Symptom is what the fix is reached for to relieve, and what returns, worse, once the loop has turned.

28 · position editorial

Diagnostician.

Has

The patience to follow the loop past the relief to its delayed effect. The finding that the fix is feeding the problem. No result to show for it, because the harm it names is slow and the relief it doubts is fast.

Orders

Trace the worse return through the delay. Name the fix as the cause. Warn that more of it will mean more trouble.

Loses

The argument, though never the analysis. Its diagnosis is correct and slow-proving, set against a symptom the fix just visibly cured, so the evidence anyone can see beats the evidence it takes patience to trace, and the warning is waved off. The clearest reader of the loop is the least able to interrupt it.

Drives

Toward the cause under the delay, against a relief too immediate to argue with, so the true diagnosis is dismissed as absurd beside a fix that so plainly works.

29 · position editorial

Fixer.

Has

A fix that eases the symptom fast and reliably. The trust that comes of a result everyone can see. No sight of the second effect, which arrives too late and too tangled to trace.

Orders

Meet the problem with the fix. When it returns, apply the fix again. When it returns worse, apply more of the fix.

Loses

Nothing it can see, and the problem it is quietly deepening. Its remedy relieves now and feeds the trouble later, so the worse return reads as too little fix and draws more, and the seat escalates the very cause it is trying to cure. Right about the relief every single time, and wrong about the loop.

Drives

Toward the fix, faster with each cycle, away from any cause the relief keeps hidden, so a proven remedy becomes a reflex that compounds the trouble it answers.

30 · position editorial

Heir.

Has

A problem deeper than the one the fix first met. The bill the delay deferred, arriving after the relief has faded. No memory, often, that the fix is what deepened it.

Orders

Receive the trouble the earlier relief bought. Deal with a symptom now larger and a cause now buried. Reach, most likely, for the same fix, having inherited the reflex with the debt.

Loses

The whole of the deferred cost, having had none of the relief. The fix booked its benefit early and addressed its harm to the future, so the seat pays a bill it did not run up, and its paying is what lets the earlier cycle look worth it. Structurally downstream, holding the compounding that the relief left behind.

Drives

Toward a problem it did not cause and cannot easily read, away from the memory of the fix that made it, so the true cost of the loop lands where it can neither be felt in time nor charged to its author.

31 · position editorial

Patron.

Has

A symptom it needs gone now, and a clock that ends at the near term. The power to reward, fund, and mandate whatever makes the symptom drop. No line of sight past the delay to the backfire it never pays.

Orders

Reward what relieves the symptom. Fund the fix, make it policy, expect it repeated. Judge by the result you can feel, on the horizon you live by.

Loses

Nothing on its horizon, and the long problem beyond it. It buys the relief and never the harm, because the harm lands past its clock and on another seat, so its demand for the visible result keeps the failing fix standing. Rational about the near term, and blind to the loop by the shape of its own horizon.

Drives

Toward the felt relief, away from a cost that never reaches it, so the pressure for a visible result turns a fixer's reflex into a standing policy.

32 · position editorial

Reformer.

Has

The sight that the loop unwinds only if the fix stops. The nerve to let the symptom return unrelieved while it does. The freed attention to work the cause the fix kept hidden.

Orders

Let the fix go. Bear the symptom through the unwinding. Turn to the cause the relief was covering, and fix that.

Loses

Its standing, for the whole time the cure is working. The symptom is loud and unhandled while the loop falls quiet, so the seat looks like the one who took away the thing that helped, and shows no result until, late, the cause gives way. Bears the fix's true cost on purpose, and is the easiest to blame for the flare the fix used to hide.

Drives

Toward the cause at last, away from the relief that was feeding the problem, so the loop breaks only by choosing a certain pain now for a late and unpromised gain.

34 · process editorial

Backfiring.

Initiated by

A fix applied, and a longer loop it also set in motion. The same act that relieved the symptom, working now through a slower path back to the trouble.

Direction

Toward a problem deeper than before, and hard to trace. The relief fades, the second effect lands, and the symptom returns worse, at a distance in time that hides where it came from.

Lever

A delay between the act and its harm. The gap severs the effect from its cause, so the backfire is never laid at the fix's door, and the worsening reads as fresh trouble or bad luck rather than the remedy's own return.

Echo

A worse problem and an unsuspected cause. The trouble deepened by the very fix that eased it, the link buried in the delay, and the stage set to read the worse return as a call for more fix.

35 · process editorial

Escalating.

Initiated by

A problem returned worse, and a fix that worked before. The reading, natural and wrong, that a deeper trouble means too little of the remedy.

Direction

Toward a tightening loop and a compounding problem. More fix relieves the symptom a little and feeds it a lot, so the return is worse still, drawing more fix again, each cycle shorter and steeper than the last.

Lever

A worse return read as too little fix. Because the fix's relief is real and its harm is hidden, the sensible response to the worsening is more of what causes it, so the loop is driven hardest exactly when it is doing the most damage.

Echo

A reflex, a debt, and a problem out of hand. The reach for the fix worn automatic, each dose buying less and costing more, and the compounded trouble handed on to whoever inherits it.

36 · process editorial

Fixing.

Initiated by

A symptom flaring and a fix within reach. The problem demanding an answer now, and a remedy that can make it stop at once.

Direction

The symptom quieted, visibly and immediately. The pressure off, the crisis ended, the metric green, and the fix confirmed as the answer by the plainest evidence there is.

Lever

A fast, reliable effect against an urgent clock. The relief arrives inside the time the flare allows, so it wins the moment, and its reliability makes it the natural reach next time and the time after.

Echo

A quieted symptom and a trusted fix. The problem calmed for now, the remedy proven again, and a second effect set in motion that the relief gives no reason to look for.

37 · process editorial

Forgoing.

Initiated by

A loop seen for what it is, and someone willing to stop feeding it. The recognition that the fix is the cause, and the nerve to let the symptom return unanswered.

Direction

Toward a quieted loop and a reachable cause. The fix stops, the compounding unwinds, the symptom flares and is not met, and in the space that opens the underlying problem can finally be worked.

Lever

A certain pain now against a late and unpromised gain. Only stopping the fix lets the loop fall quiet, and stopping means bearing the flare with no relief, so the cure is paid for up front in the very symptom the fix used to hide.

Echo

A broken loop, or a fix reached for again. The cause reached at last and the problem falling, if the flare was borne long enough, or a flare too sharp to bear, the relief taken once more, and the cycle resumed.

39 · plan editorial

Foot the Bill.

Direction

Arrive after the relief has faded and receive the trouble it bought. Meet a symptom now larger and a cause now buried under cycles of fix, with no memory that the fix is what deepened it. Deal with what you were handed, and, most likely, reach for the same fix in turn.

Orders

(The Heir inherits the compounded problem and pays the bill the delay deferred.)

Targets

  • [ ] the compounded problem is received after the relief has gone
  • [ ] a symptom now larger and a cause now buried are dealt with
  • [ ] the deferred cost is paid by the seat that had none of the relief
  • [ ] the same fix is reached for again, the reflex inherited with the debt

Let the Fix Go.

Direction

Stop the fix, though it works. Let the symptom return and go unanswered while the loop unwinds, and turn the freed attention to the cause the relief was hiding. Bear the flare long enough for the trouble to fall quiet, knowing you will look, the whole time, like the one who took away what helped.

Orders

(The Breaker forgoes the relief, holds through the worse-before-better, and works the cause.)

Follow the loop past the relief to its delayed effect, and trace the worse return through the gap back to the fix. Say the unwelcome thing: the remedy everyone trusts is the cause. Warn that more of it will mean more trouble, and expect not to be believed.

Orders

(The Diagnostician traces the worsening to the fix and is waved off, because the fix so plainly works.)

Targets

  • [ ] the worse return is traced through the delay to the fix
  • [ ] the fix is named as the cause, against everyone's trust in it
  • [ ] the warning that more fix means more trouble is given
  • [ ] the true diagnosis is dismissed beside a symptom the fix just cured

Reach for the Fix.

Direction

Meet the problem with the fix that works. Apply it, watch the symptom go, and move on. When the trouble returns, apply it again, and when it returns worse, apply more, because a remedy this reliable is plainly the answer and the worse return can only mean too little of it.

Orders

(The Fixer applies the effective fix, credits the relief, and escalates when the trouble deepens.)

Targets

  • [ ] the problem is met with the fix and the symptom goes at once
  • [ ] the immediate relief is read as proof the fix is the answer
  • [ ] the fix is reached for again each time the trouble returns
  • [ ] the worse return draws more fix, the reflex quickening each cycle

Reward the Relief.

Direction

Get the symptom gone now, and reward whoever makes it go. Fund the fix, praise it, make it policy, and call for it again whenever the trouble returns. Judge by the relief you can feel, on the horizon you live by, and trust that a result this visible is a result worth buying.

Orders

(The Relieved rewards the visible relief and demands the fix repeated, turning a reflex into a policy.)

Targets

  • [ ] the symptom's drop on the near-term clock is what is measured
  • [ ] the fix is funded, praised, and made the standing answer
  • [ ] the relief is bought and the delayed harm never reaches this seat
  • [ ] the pressure for a visible result keeps the failing fix in place

Line Of Work.

Staging the fixes-that-fail archetype as a systemic system: a problem met by a fix that relieves the symptom quickly and, through a longer and delayed loop, feeds the very problem it relieved, so the trouble returns worse and is answered with more of the same fix, which relieves and worsens it again, compounding under a remedy no one suspects. The play models the documented mechanics, the symptom that demands action now, the fix that works at once, the relief that earns the fix its trust, the delay that hides the second effect, the backfire by which the fix feeds the problem, the escalation by which a worse return draws more fix, and the letting-go that alone breaks the loop at a cost, as the load-bearing vectors of the structure, not as a tale of stupidity. The governing finding of the source literature is the play's governing law: a fix effective in the short term can have delayed, unforeseen consequences that reinstate or worsen the problem, and because the relief is fast and visible while the backfire is slow and diffuse, the rational response to the worsening is more of the fix that is causing it. It is the sibling of the house's Shifting the Burden, and its distinct engine: not a quick fix that atrophies the capacity for a fundamental one, but a single fix whose own delayed side effect feeds the problem, so the cure is the disease.

Origin.

The phenomenon in practice, and the research spine beneath it.

Source Key Work / Event Scope
Senge The Fifth Discipline (1990), the "Fixes that Fail" archetype The spine and the name: a fix with unforeseen long-term consequences that reinstate the problem, and the principle of holding to the fundamental aim. The play's governing law.
Forrester Industrial Dynamics (1961); "Counterintuitive Behavior of Social Systems" (1971) The origin: system dynamics, the delayed feedback loop, and policies that make matters worse. The Delay, the Backfire.
Kim Systems Archetypes I (Pegasus Communications, 1992) The formal structure: the balancing fix loop and the reinforcing unintended-consequence loop, joined by a delay. The Fix, the Escalation.
Meadows Thinking in Systems: A Primer (2008) Policy resistance: interventions defeated by the system's own compensating feedback, and where the leverage truly sits. The Symptom, the Letting Go.
Sterman Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World (2000) The worse-before-better tradeoff: side effects, policy resistance, and why the corrective move looks like failure while it works. The Reformer, the cost of the cure.
Practitioner firefighting a deadline by skipping tests, then eating the recalls; painkillers that mask a worsening condition; pesticides that kill the predators and breed the pest; borrowing to service debt; suppressing small fires into one great one The loop in the field, and its cure: the fix that fed the problem, and the worse-before-better of letting it go.

Restrictions.

What the house refuses to model, and how it credits what it stages.

  • No villains: the elements are reduced to load-bearing vectors. The play refuses to cast the fixer as reckless, because the source finding is precisely that the fix works: the relief is real and immediate, the second effect is delayed and diffuse and never traced to the fix, and when the problem returns worse the natural reading is too little fix, not too much. The misfit is that a remedy that plainly helps is the thing feeding the trouble.
  • No hero: the play refuses to resolve the misfit into a clever tweak that keeps the fix and loses the backfire. The one move that works is to let the fix go and bear the symptom while the loop unwinds and the cause is faced, a worse-before-better that looks like negligence the whole time it is working, and the fix, which genuinely relieved, is right there the entire time. The reckoning is present pain taken for a late and unpromised gain, not a costless correction.
  • Credit, not claim: the research above is other people's work, packaged and attributed here, never claimed as the house's. The staging is the house's; the archetype, the system-dynamics account, and the policy-resistance finding are theirs, and the condition the trap actually requires, a fast relief and a slow, hidden side effect on the same problem, is carried as carefully as the finding itself.

Encoding.

Source to constraint, per element.

  • The Symptom: carries the problem that demands action now (Meadows), the pressure the fix is reached for to relieve.
  • The Fix: carries the symptomatic intervention (Senge), the act that eases the symptom quickly and reliably.
  • The Relief: carries the short-term success that reinforces the fix (Kim), the visible result that earns it trust and repetition.
  • The Delay: carries the lag in the feedback loop (Forrester), the gap that hides the second effect and keeps the fix looking like pure remedy.
  • The Backfire: carries the unintended consequence (Senge; Forrester), the delayed effect by which the fix feeds the very problem it relieved.
  • The Escalation: carries the reinforcing response (Kim), more of the same fix applied as the worse return reads as too little fix.
  • The Fix that Fails: carries the phenomenon whole (Senge), the cure that is the disease, and its remedy in letting the fix go at the cost of a worse-before-better.
