Synopsis.
Name
Safety in Numbers. There is a crowd, and the crowd is good to be in, and this is not a comfort or a story, it is a fact of the arithmetic: in a throng a member finds a mate without searching the whole range, a throng dilutes the predator so any one is unlikely to be the one taken, a throng mobs the intruder and forages the ground and warms the huddle, and every one of these is better the more of them there are, so the benefit each member draws is not fixed but rises with the density around it. And the member does nothing clever and nothing wrong: it simply lives the way the crowd rewards, staying with the many, trusting the throng to find the mate and dilute the hawk and raise the alarm, because that is what works, and it works precisely because the numbers are there. And the numbers are there, and so it works, and the population is sound, and every count taken reads as a population that will go on. And then the numbers fall, for reasons outside anyone in the throng: a harvest, a drought, a road through the range, a hard winter, attrition that no member authored and none could prevent. And here is the turn, and it is a quiet one, because as the throng thins the benefit thins with it, the mate harder to find in a sparser range, the predator no longer diluted across a crowd, the mob too small to drive the intruder off, and the same reliance that paid at high density pays less at low, not because the member changed but because the density did. And the count still reads survivable, a number that a year ago was plenty, and nothing in the number shows the line beneath it. But there is a line. Below a critical density the per-capita growth rate crosses zero and turns negative, so a population thinned past it does not just grow more slowly, it shrinks, and shrinking lowers the density, and lower density lowers the benefit, and lower benefit lowers the growth again, so the decline feeds the decline and the population falls faster the fewer of it remain, a spiral that no member started and that no member can halt by behaving well, because every member is already behaving well, doing exactly what thrived in the crowd, and the crowd is the one thing that is going. Nobody over-bred and nobody erred. The mate-seeking was sound, the huddling was sound, the trust in the throng was sound, each was the behaviour the numbers rewarded and each is faithful still. It is only that the safety was in the numbers, really in them and not in any one member, so to lose the numbers is to lose the safety, and a benefit that rose with density falls with it, and a population thinned below the line where its own fitness turns negative is drawn down by the very density dependence that had held it up, the safety in numbers becoming, below the line, a peril in fewness that reads survivable to the last count before the last.
Arc
The bend is this: per-capita fitness rises with density, so the safety the crowd confers is real and the crowd's to lose, and a population thinned below a critical line turns to negative growth and declines faster the smaller it gets, a self-reinforcing spiral that reads survivable right up until the line is crossed. It runs on a benefit that only a crowd can give. Individuals do better in larger groups: mates are found without searching the whole range, the predator is diluted across many bodies, the intruder is mobbed, the ground is foraged in company, and each of these improves with the number present, so the per-capita fitness of a member rises with the density around it (Allee, on animal aggregations, under-crowding as real a harm as over-crowding and a positive relation between density and survival). So the safety is genuine and not a comfort, and this is what makes it a trap rather than a fault, because the crowd truly confers the benefit, and to be in the crowd is truly the thing that works. And no member changes what it does. Each keeps to the behaviour the throng rewarded, trusting the many to find the mate and dilute the hawk and raise the alarm and warm the huddle, and these are component gains of density and not habits a member could sensibly drop (Courchamp, Berec and Gascoigne, on the mechanisms of the Allee effect, mate-finding, cooperative defence and cooperative foraging as component effects that scale with numbers). The behaviour is not an error to be corrected; it is the behaviour the crowd made correct. And the benefit falls as the numbers fall. Because the gain is per-capita and density-dependent, a thinning of the throng lowers the benefit each member draws, so the same reliance that paid at high density pays less as density drops, the mate harder to find, the dilution weaker, the mob too small, per-capita fitness declining with the population's own thinning and not with any change in the member (Stephens, Sutherland and Freckleton, on the definition of the Allee effect as a positive relationship between per-capita growth rate and density). What rose with the numbers falls with them, faithfully, both ways. And below a line the growth turns negative. There is a critical density beneath which the per-capita growth rate falls below zero, so a population thinned past it does not merely grow more slowly but shrinks, and the threshold is a real line and not a slope, the mark of a strong Allee effect (Dennis, on the critical population size and extinction risk, the density below which growth cannot sustain the population). Above the line the numbers read as plenty; below it the same numbers cannot hold, and the line gives no sign of itself until it is passed. And the decline feeds the decline. Each loss lowers the density, lower density lowers the per-capita benefit, lower benefit lowers the growth, and lower growth is a further loss, so a population below the line falls faster the fewer of it remain, drawn down by mutually reinforcing feedbacks into a spiral no member started (Gilpin and Soulé, on the extinction vortex, small populations pulled toward extinction by the reinforcing loops their own smallness sets off). The spiral is not a blow from outside but the density dependence running in reverse, the engine that lifted the population now lowering it. And the count reads survivable to the last. The headcount above the line looks like a viable population and carries no mark of the threshold beneath it, so a number that would have been ample yesterday reads ample today, and nothing in the count warns that the same behaviours can no longer sustain the few, the cue reading safe right up to the crossing (the deceptive headcount that stays reassuring until the line is already behind it). The signal that would warn is the one the trap withholds. None of it is over-breeding or a failing. The mate-seeking was sound, the huddling was sound, the trust in the throng was sound, each was the behaviour the numbers rewarded and each is faithful still, so no member erred and the safety was simply real and then gone with the numbers that held it. What made the population thrive, that its fitness rose with its density, is exactly what draws it down once the density falls, and a benefit genuine at high numbers is a deficit at low ones. Hold the numbers above the line: keep the density over the critical threshold by protecting the range, restraining the attrition, and supplementing the throng before it thins to the line, and the spiral is never entered and the safety never lost: but this means paying continuously to hold a population above a line it gives no sign of nearing, spending on numbers that look ample to keep them from a threshold no count reveals, restraining a harvest that reads as sustainable, and treating a healthy headcount as suspect precisely because the danger shows only after the crossing, so the numbers are held only by paying, without pause and without visible thanks, the cost of guarding a population against a line that reads survivable until it is past.
Stakes
Whether a population can keep the safety its numbers confer, when the safety is really in the numbers and the numbers can be thinned below the line where its own fitness turns against it. Every plot but the last moves the same way: toward the numbers drawn down, by attrition no member authored and behaviour no member should change, and away from the numbers held above the line, which would ask a continuous spending on a population that reads ample and a restraint on a harvest that reads sustainable. The production cannot make the safety hold without the numbers, because the benefit is per-capita and rises with density, so a benefit genuine at high numbers is a deficit at low ones, and a population thinned below the critical line is drawn down by the very density dependence that had held it up, not by any member's fault: no one over-bred and every behaviour was the one the crowd rewarded. It can only show that the mate-seeking was sound and the huddling was sound and the trust in the throng was sound, that the safety was real and real to lose, and that the one move that keeps it, holding the density above the line before the crossing, must be made by paying, continuously and without visible thanks, the cost of guarding a healthy-looking population against a threshold that reads survivable until it is past, so the throng is faithful and the count is ample and the safety it left with is the one thing, below the line, it cannot keep.
