Synopsis.

Name

Shifting the Burden. A symptom flares, and there are two ways to answer it: the quick relief that works today, and the slow cure that works for good ... and the quick relief is chosen, again and again, because it is fast and the cure is far, until the muscle that would have cured it has wasted from disuse, and the relief that was a choice is the only thing left that works.

Arc

The bend is this: relieve the symptom the easy way and you weaken the power to fix the cause, so the easy way becomes the only way. It runs on two answers to one problem, and a clock that favours the wrong one. The quick fix acts now: it takes the pain away, buys the quarter, ends the crisis, and asks nothing of a capacity no one has time to build. The fundamental fix acts later: it addresses the cause, but it is slow, and its reward arrives long after the symptom would have to be endured to get there. So the pressed hand reaches for the relief, sensibly, every time. And here is the turn that makes it a trap rather than a mere shortcut: each time the relief is used, the fundamental capacity goes one more cycle unused, and unused capacity wastes. The symptom returns, met again by the fix, and the muscle that would have ended it is a little weaker, so next time the fix is a little more necessary, until it is wholly necessary, and the cause is untouchable behind the relief that keeps the symptom just bearable enough to never fix. Endure the symptom long enough to rebuild the capacity, and the burden shifts back: but the withdrawal is real, the cure is slow, and the fix is right there.

Stakes

Whether the cause is ever cured, or only ever relieved. Every plot but the last moves the same way: not toward the fundamental fix, which is slow and far, but toward the quick one, which is fast and here and quietly fatal to the power that would have made it unnecessary. The production cannot make a pressed hand endure a symptom it can end in a moment. It can only show that no one was lazy and every relief was reasonable, that the fix worked every single time it was used, and that the one thing that would have ended the problem, the slow capacity the fix let waste, is the very thing each easy relief made a little harder to rebuild.

Plots.

The Relief A symptom flares and demands an answer now. The Reliever brings the quick fix, the Pressed takes it gratefully, and the pain goes. Closes when the symptom is relieved and the cause is left exactly where it was.

The Erosion Cue: the symptom is handled, so the slow work of the cure has no urgency. The Builder's fundamental capacity goes another cycle unused and unfunded, and unused capacity wastes. Closes when the power to fix the cause is measurably weaker than before the fix was reached for.

The Dependence Cue: the symptom returns, and the capacity to cure it is too wasted to try. The Habitué reaches for the fix without a second thought, because the fix is now the only thing that still works. Closes when the relief is no longer a choice but a necessity, and the cause is untouchable behind it.

The Weaning Cue: someone sees that the fix is the reason the problem is permanent. The Weaner funds the fundamental capacity and endures the symptom long enough to rebuild it. Closes when the burden shifts back to the cure ... or the withdrawal is judged too painful, the fix is reached for once more, and the muscle wastes another notch.

02 · plot editorial

The Dependence.

Cue

The dispensary, and a symptom returning to a capacity too wasted to cure it. The reach for the fix has become reflex, made before the flare has even fully formed.

Stage

The Habitué tables Lean on the Fix: keep the relief flowing, budget for it forever, build around it, so the dependence hardens into infrastructure. The cure is no longer merely deferred but unreachable, defended by everything now resting on the relief, and the memory of a system that could self-correct fades into a story.

Tension

The choice is gone, and its absence goes unnoticed. There is no drama here, only settling: the fix is treated as how things simply work, the reliance has stopped registering as reliance, and that is exactly the state that makes it unbreakable. The system is not deciding to depend on the fix. It has been worn past the point where depending or not is still a thing it can decide.

03 · plot editorial

The Erosion.

Cue

The workshop, quiet, while the alarm rings somewhere else. The symptom is handled, so the slow work of the cure has no urgency, and no urgency means no funding and no use.

Stage

The Builder tables Build the Capacity: fund the slow power that would end the cause, and keep the muscle in use, so the fundamental fix stays deliverable. But the request is sound and never urgent, so it is deferred again, and the atrophy takes another notch off a capacity that is only kept by being used.

Tension

The cure is not rejected, only postponed, and postponement is how it dies. No one votes to lose the capability: they simply, reasonably, fund the fire over the fire-proofing, every cycle. The Builder's case gets better and the Builder's muscle gets weaker at the same time, until the argument for the cure is strongest exactly when the power to deliver it is nearly gone.

04 · plot editorial

The Relief.

Cue

The alarm, a symptom flaring and demanding an answer now. Two answers exist, a fast relief and a slow cure, but only one can act inside the time the flare allows.

Stage

The Pressed tables Reach for Relief: stop the pain now, take the answer that fits the deadline, mean to start the cure later, so the quick fix eases the symptom and the cause is left exactly where it was. The delay rules the slow cure out before it is even considered: it could not have acted in time, so it was never really on the table.

Tension

Everyone did the right thing, and the cause is untouched. Relieving a live symptom now is responsible, the fix works, the thanks are earned, and the fundamental cure genuinely was too slow to help today. Nothing here is a mistake, and that is the trap loading: a wholly reasonable relief that ends the crisis and leaves in place the thing that will cause the next one.

05 · plot editorial

The Weaning.

Cue

The weaning, where someone has seen that the relief is the reason the problem is permanent. The fix is to be rationed and the wasted capacity rebuilt, through a withdrawal that will hurt before it helps.

Stage

The Weaner tables Wean and Invest: put the budget on the workshop, draw the fix down, and bear the flare long enough for the muscle to return, so the shifting burden moves back toward the cause. The withdrawal is not a side effect of the cure but its method: only a rationed fix forces the capacity back into use, and only use rebuilds it.

Tension

The one move that works looks like negligence the entire time it is working. While the capacity rebuilds the symptom returns unhandled, so the Weaner is the one who let the fire burn, judged by a pain deliberately borne, and shows no result until, suddenly, the cause is cured. It holds ... or one flare proves too sharp to bear, the fix is reached for again, the muscle wastes another notch, and the burden shifts back to the relief.

07 · pitch editorial

Handled.

Tenor

Competent, relieved, on top of it. The crisis met and put down, the symptom gone by end of day, the team free to move on. The voice of a group that handles things, spoken by people who really did handle the thing in front of them.

Undertow

Under the relief, a muscle going soft from never being used. Each fast answer is one more cycle the slow capacity sits idle, and idle capacity wastes, so the power to end the problem quietly leaves while the problem stays. Nobody neglects the cure on purpose: it is only ever less urgent than the symptom, every single time.

Nerve

The feeling of coping, and coping well, each quick fix a small competent win, the real cure always sensible to start tomorrow, when this fire is out and the next has not yet caught.

Echo

After the run: a problem no longer solvable, only manageable, a capacity too wasted to trust, and a fix that started as a choice and ended as the only thing that still works.

09 · persona editorial

The Builder.

Projection

Patient, deep, a little sidelined. Holds the slow skill that would end the problem for good, and knows it takes time to build and keep. Watches the fires get fought while the fire-proofing goes unbought.

Action

Works the fundamental fix, underfunded and unhurried, when allowed. Asks for the time and the investment the cause actually needs. Loses the argument to the alarm, again, because the alarm is louder and now.

Shadow

Its capacity wastes precisely because the relief keeps working. Every symptom the quick fix handles is a reason the slow cure can wait, so the muscle it tends goes unused, and unused it withers, until even the Builder is not sure it could deliver the cure it once could. Starved not by malice but by the relief always being more urgent.

Tell

"If we fixed the cause, this would stop happening." True, and never quite as pressing as the thing happening right now.

10 · persona editorial

The Habitué.

Projection

Settled, unbothered, sure this is just how it works now. Has reached for the relief so many times it no longer remembers reaching. Treats the fix as infrastructure, not intervention.

Action

Leans on the quick fix without a second thought. Reaches for it before the symptom fully forms, because the capacity to do otherwise is gone. Budgets for the relief in perpetuity and calls it the cost of doing business.

Shadow

It cannot stop, and no longer wants to. The reliance has gone so deep that removing the fix would collapse the thing it props, so the addiction defends itself, and the memory of a system that could self-correct fades into a story the old-timers tell. Not weak by choice: weakened past the point of choosing.

Tell

"This is just how things are here." The voice of a dependence so complete it has stopped feeling like one.

11 · persona editorial

The Pressed.

Projection

Responsible, harried, doing the reasonable thing. Has a live problem and a clock, and no room to wait for a slow cure. Wants the pain to stop so the work can go on.

Action

Reaches for the relief that works today. Takes the fast answer gratefully and gets back to it. Means to start the real fix soon, once this one fire is out.

Shadow

Its soon never comes, because the next symptom always does. Each reasonable reach for relief is a cycle the cure goes unbuilt, and the reaching feels like coping, not like a trap closing. Would swear it is handling things, and it is, one symptom at a time, forever.

Tell

"Let us just get through today." A sentence that is true every day, and is how the cause is never touched.

12 · persona editorial

The Reliever.

Projection

Capable, quick, genuinely helpful. Has a fix that works and the readiness to apply it the moment the alarm sounds. Believes it is solving the problem, and it is solving the symptom.

Action

Applies the quick fix and takes the pain away. Arrives at the crisis, ends it, and is visibly, gratefully credited. Answers the next flare the same way, and the next.

Shadow

Every relief it gives makes the next one more needed. The help is real and the thanks are earned, and both quietly deepen the reliance and starve the cure, so the better it is at relieving, the more permanent the problem becomes. Rewarded for the rescue, never charged for the dependence.

Tell

"Do not worry, I have got this." Said at every flare, which is why every flare keeps coming back.

13 · persona editorial

The Weaner.

Projection

Steady, unpopular, willing to hurt now to heal later. Sees that the relief is the reason the problem is permanent, and moves to rebuild the capacity it wasted. Braces for the symptom to flare while the cure is still too weak to hold.

Action

Funds the fundamental fix and rations the quick one. Protects the slow capacity from the pull of the next alarm, and holds the line through the flare. Endures the withdrawal long enough for the muscle to come back.

Shadow

Its cure looks like negligence for a long time. While the capacity rebuilds the symptom returns unrelieved, so the Weaner is the one who let the fire burn, judged by a pain it chose to bear, and one hard flare can undo the whole wean. Right, slow, and blamed the entire way.

Tell

"We take the hit now so we stop taking it forever." The one sentence the alarm makes hardest to keep.

15 · place editorial

The Alarm.

Shown

A crisis, a red light, a phone that will not stop. The symptom loud and present, and everyone turned toward it.

Holds

The urgency that decides the answer. Here the fast fix is the only feasible one, because the slow cure cannot act inside the time the alarm allows.

Offers

A clear, answerable problem. Something that can be ended today, visibly, so the day can be called a win.

Withheld

Any room for the cure. The alarm rewards whatever stops it soonest, and the fundamental fix, being slow, is never that, so the place that most needs the cure is the place that can least choose it.

16 · place editorial

The Dispensary.

Shown

A shelf of relief, a counter, a hand always there to dispense it. The fix on tap, fast to reach and easy to take.

Holds

The reliance, deepening with every visit. Here the relief is handed over and taken, and each transaction makes the next one likelier, until the visits are a habit and then a need.

Offers

Instant, dependable relief. Whatever the flare, the same answer is on the shelf, and it works, every time, which is exactly why the shelf is never empty.

Withheld

Any cure. The dispensary treats the symptom and stocks nothing that touches the cause, so the more it is used the more it is needed, and it is used a great deal.

17 · place editorial

The Weaning.

Shown

A schedule for less of the fix, a budget moved to the workshop, a flare met without the usual relief. The hard middle where the cure is not yet strong and the fix is being taken away.

Holds

The withdrawal, and the wager underneath it. Here the symptom returns unrelieved while the capacity slowly comes back, and the whole bet is that the muscle rebuilds before the pain forces a relapse.

Offers

The one path back to the cure. Only by rationing the fix and enduring the flare does the fundamental capacity get used again, and only by being used does it recover.

Withheld

Comfort, and proof, for a long time. The weaning shows no result while it hurts most, so it looks like negligence right up until it works, and one unbearable flare can send the whole thing back to the dispensary.

18 · place editorial

The Workshop.

Shown

Tools, half-finished work, a skill that takes years to grow. The slow place where the cure is made, quiet while the alarm rings elsewhere.

Holds

The capacity that would end the problem, and its slow decay. Here the fundamental fix lives, and here it wastes, because a workshop unused gathers dust and a skill unpracticed fades.

Offers

The only real cure. Given time and investment, this is the place that addresses the cause and makes the dispensary unnecessary.

Withheld

Speed, and so attention. The workshop cannot answer an alarm, so it is always the thing that can wait, and waiting is exactly what wastes it, until the cure it held is no longer sure to be there.

20 · piece editorial

The Atrophy.

Place

At the workshop, in the tools going cold and the skill going quiet. The slow rusting of a capacity that is never called on.

Load bearing

Without it the quick fix would be a harmless shortcut you could stop taking any time. With it every relief has a hidden cost paid by the cure: the capacity to fix the cause is a muscle, and a muscle unused wastes, so each cycle the fix is chosen the power to do without it shrinks. The Atrophy is load bearing because it is the turn that makes this an addiction and not a mere habit (Senge; Repenning & Sterman): the symptomatic solution does not just fail to cure, it actively erodes the ability to cure, so the two paths are not independent and the easy one eats the hard one.

Apparent

Nothing at all. It looks like nothing is happening, because a capacity fading from disuse makes no noise and shows no event: there is no day the cure is lost, only a slow slope no one stands on long enough to notice. The absence of a signal is exactly what lets it run to completion.

21 · piece editorial

The Delay.

Place

Between the reach and the reward, in the long gap the cure asks the system to wait. The stretch of time where the fundamental fix costs and has not yet paid.

Load bearing

Without it the two fixes would compete on merit and the better one might win. With it they never compete fairly: the quick fix pays now and the fundamental one pays much later, so against any live symptom and any real clock the fast answer wins by default, not by being better. The Delay is load bearing because it is the property that makes the choice a foregone conclusion (Forrester; Sterman), the reason a system full of sensible actors picks the worse long-run answer every single time: the good option is simply too slow to be felt in the window where the decision is made.

Apparent

Just how long things take. It looks like a neutral fact of the world, not a force: cures are slow, reliefs are fast, everyone knows that. But that plain fact is doing all the work, because it is what strips the fundamental fix of any chance the moment a clock is running.

Yearbook

Weighed against the fundamental fix, and never against the quick fix. It is the thumb on the scale: the Delay is why the pressed reaches for relief every time, not from weakness but from a race the cure was never able to win.

22 · piece editorial

The Dependence.

Place

At the dispensary, in the reach that has become reflex. And through the whole system, reorganised around the fix it now cannot do without.

Load bearing

Without it the misfit would end when someone simply decided to stop. With it stopping is no longer available: the capacity is too wasted to cure and the structure is now built on the relief, so the fix defends itself, and the more it is relied on the more indispensable it makes itself. The Dependence is load bearing because it is the reinforcing loop closing (Meadows), the point where a habit becomes a need and a shortcut becomes infrastructure, so that removing the fix would not restore the cure but collapse the thing propped on it.

Apparent

Just how the system works now. It looks like a settled fact of operations, a permanent line in the budget, the normal cost of running the thing. The reliance has gone so deep it has stopped registering as reliance, which is precisely the state that makes it unbreakable.

23 · piece editorial

The Fundamental Fix.

Place

At the workshop, slow, quiet, made over years and kept in use. The cure that lives in a capacity, not on a shelf.

Load bearing

Without it the misfit is only a shortcut, and a shortcut is not a trap. With it there is a real cure that the quick fix is competing against and, worse, corroding: the fundamental fix is not a thing you buy once but a capacity you must keep exercised, so it can be lost. The Fundamental Fix is load bearing because it is what the archetype is truly about (Senge; Repenning & Sterman), the fragile, slow-built power to end the problem whose neglect is the whole cost, and whose existence is why the burden has somewhere worse to shift from.

Apparent

An expense that can always wait. It looks like the responsible-but-not-urgent line, the investment for a calmer day, the thing to fund once the fires are out. It is always sound and never pressing, and so it is always the item deferred.

Yearbook

Tended by the builder, and wasted by the atrophy. It is the cure at stake: the Fundamental Fix is what the delay makes lose every race, and what disuse quietly takes off the table one cycle at a time.

24 · piece editorial

The Quick Fix.

Place

At the dispensary, on the shelf, always in stock. The relief handed over in the moment the alarm sounds.

Load bearing

Without it the pressed hand would have to face the cause, because there would be nothing else to reach for. With it there is always an easier answer, one that works now and asks nothing of the slow capacity, so the cause is never faced. The Quick Fix is load bearing because it is the symptomatic solution (Senge), the relief that is real and immediate and that quietly displaces the fundamental one, and because it works every single time it is used, which is exactly what makes it so hard to give up and so certain to be used again.

Apparent

Competence, and good service. It looks like handling things: the crisis ended, the symptom gone, the day won. Every use is a genuine, creditable success, which is why no one experiences the string of them as a slow surrender of the cure.

25 · piece editorial

The Shifting Burden.

Place

Across the whole run, from the alarm to the weaning. And wherever a fast relief is available for a slow problem, which is nearly everywhere.

Load bearing

Without it the parts are a scatter: a symptom, two fixes, a delay, an atrophy, a dependence. With it they are one law: relieve a symptom by a means that wastes the capacity to cure it, and the burden shifts from solving the problem to feeding the relief, so the fix becomes permanent and the cause becomes unreachable. The Shifting Burden is load bearing because it is the archetype read at once (Senge; Meadows), and it names the only exit: not a better relief but a weaning, funding the wasted capacity and enduring the symptom while it rebuilds, protection given up so prevention can return.

Apparent

A system coping, sensibly, indefinitely. It looks like ordinary competent management: problems handled as they arise, reliefs kept in stock, operations steady. Nothing on the surface is a failure, and that is the whole of it, because the burden shifts not through any bad decision but through a run of good ones.

Yearbook

Held whole by nobody: assembled from the quick fix, the atrophy, and the dependence, and answered only, and painfully, by the weaner. It is the misfit named: each easy relief is a loan against the power to cure, and the loan comes due as a problem that can no longer be solved, only fed.

26 · piece editorial

The Symptom.

Place

At the alarm, loud and present and turned toward. The flare that has to be met today, whatever else waits.

Load bearing

Without it there is no pressure, and no reason to reach for anything at all. With it there is a clock, and the clock is what tilts every choice toward the fast answer: the symptom is what has to be dealt with now, so it is the symptom, not the cause, that sets the terms. The Symptom is load bearing because it is the demand the whole structure answers, the recurring pressure that makes the quick fix feel not just easier but necessary, and that keeps coming back precisely because it is the thing relieved rather than the thing cured.

Apparent

The problem itself. It looks like the whole of what is wrong, the thing to be solved, so solving it, ending the flare, feels like solving the problem. That mistake, symptom for cause, is the door the misfit walks in through.

Yearbook

Felt by the pressed, answered at the alarm. It is the recurring demand: the Symptom is what the quick fix is reached for to relieve, and its return, cycle after cycle, is the sign the cause was never touched.

28 · position editorial

Capability Owner.

Has

The fundamental capacity, and the knowledge of how long it takes to build and keep. A cure that would end the problem, given time the deadline never grants. A case that is always sound and never urgent.

Orders

Build and maintain the capability that addresses the cause. Ask for the investment and the patience it requires. Keep the muscle in use, because a muscle unused is a muscle lost.

Loses

Its own capacity, cycle by cycle. Each symptom the quick fix handles is a reason to defer the cure, so the capability goes unexercised, and unexercised it wastes, until it can no longer deliver what it was kept for. Starved by relief, not by neglect anyone would own.

Drives

Toward a cure the system keeps postponing, losing a little strength each time it is postponed, until even it doubts the cure is still in reach.

29 · position editorial

Dependent.

Has

A total reliance on the relief, budgeted and normalised. A wasted capacity it no longer remembers having. A structure built around the fix, so that removing it would bring the structure down.

Orders

Keep the relief flowing, because nothing else now works. Treat the fix as permanent infrastructure and plan around it. Do not question a dependence the whole system rests on.

Loses

The very possibility of self-correction. The reliance has gone so deep that the cure is not merely deferred but unreachable, defended by everything now built on the fix. Weakened past the point where choosing otherwise is even an option.

Drives

Toward more of the fix, forever, not because it is chosen but because it is the only thing the wasted system can still do.

30 · position editorial

Intervenor.

Has

A fix that works fast and the standing to apply it. The visible credit that comes with ending a crisis. No charge for what the relief does to the capacity underneath.

Orders

Answer the alarm and make the symptom go. Be ready, be quick, be reliable at relief. Take the thanks and stand by for the next flare.

Loses

Nothing it can see, and that is the problem. The reliance its help creates never lands on its ledger, so the better it relieves, the more indispensable and the more damaging it becomes, invisibly. It is rewarded exactly for deepening the dependence.

Drives

Toward more relief, delivered faster, because relief is what is asked and thanked, and the erosion it feeds is nobody's line item.

31 · position editorial

Problem Owner.

Has

A live problem, a clock, and the accountability for both. Two answers within reach: a fast relief and a slow cure. No slack to endure the symptom while the slow one is built.

Orders

Stop the pain and keep the work moving. Take the answer that fits inside the deadline. Mean to start the fundamental fix, later, once there is room.

Loses

The room that would let it choose the cure. Every deadline makes the quick fix the only feasible answer, so the fundamental one is forever deferred to a calm that never comes. The choice is real in theory and gone in practice.

Drives

Toward relief now, sensibly, every cycle, which is the reasonable move each time and the trap taken as a whole.

32 · position editorial

Reformer.

Has

The authority to fund the fundamental fix and ration the quick one. The nerve to let a symptom flare while the capacity rebuilds. The unpopularity of the one who took the relief away.

Orders

Invest in the slow capacity and protect it from the next alarm. Wean the system off the fix on a schedule the flares will fight. Bear the symptom long enough for the cure to come back.

Loses

The comfort of the relief, up front and for a long time. Rebuilding a wasted capacity shows no result while the symptom returns unhandled, so the fix must be given up well before the cure can replace it. Buys the cure only by paying the whole withdrawal first.

Drives

Toward a burden shifted back to the cause, through a withdrawal that hurts and convinces no one until it is done, one hard flare away from being abandoned.

34 · process editorial

Atrophying.

Initiated by

A cure deferred because the symptom is already handled. Each flare met by relief, so the capacity that would have cured it goes unused again.

Direction

The slow power to fix the cause weakening the longer it sits idle. A skill unpracticed fading, a workshop unfunded rusting, the muscle thinning between uses.

Lever

Disuse, fed by the relief that makes use unnecessary. The better the quick fix works, the less the capacity is called on, and the less it is called on, the less of it remains.

Echo

A cure that is harder to reach than it was last cycle. The fundamental fix still named, still possible on paper, and quietly less deliverable each time it is skipped.

35 · process editorial

Depending.

Initiated by

A capacity too wasted to cure, and a symptom that still returns. The moment the fix stops being one option and becomes the only one that works.

Direction

The relief moving from choice to habit to necessity. The system reorganising around the fix, budgeting for it, building on it, until it cannot stand without it.

Lever

The compounding of atrophy: the weaker the cure, the more the fix is needed, and the more the fix is used, the weaker the cure gets. A reinforcing loop that tightens each turn.

Echo

A dependence so complete it stops feeling like one. The relief taken as infrastructure, the cure forgotten rather than missed, and the whole structure now resting on the thing that caused the problem to stay.

36 · process editorial

Relieving.

Initiated by

A symptom flaring and a fast answer within reach. The alarm sounding, and a hand that knows how to make it stop.

Direction

The pain going down and the crisis ending, now, on the deadline. Nothing changed underneath, only the surface calmed.

Lever

Speed against a clock the cure cannot beat. The relief acts inside the time available, and the fundamental fix does not, so relief wins by simply being able to arrive.

Echo

A handled symptom and an untouched cause. The problem calmed for now, primed to return, and one more cycle in which the cure was not built.

37 · process editorial

Weaning.

Initiated by

Someone seeing that the relief is the reason the problem is permanent. The decision to fund the cure and ration the fix, against the pull of the next alarm.

Direction

The quick fix drawn down and the fundamental capacity put back to use, so that using it, it recovers. The symptom endured unrelieved while the muscle slowly returns.

Lever

Deliberate discomfort held long enough to matter. Only a rationed fix forces the capacity back into use, and only use rebuilds it, so the withdrawal is not a side effect of the cure but its method.

Echo

A burden shifting back toward the cause, if the flare is survived. A capacity coming back and a dependence receding ... or a symptom too sharp to bear, the fix reached for again, and the wean undone.

39 · plan editorial

Build the Capacity.

Direction

Build and keep the slow power that would cure the cause. Ask for the time and the investment the fundamental fix requires, and keep the muscle in use, because a capacity unexercised is a capacity lost. Win the argument for the cure, if the alarm ever lets you.

Orders

(The Builder works the fundamental fix, underfunded, and loses the argument to the alarm.)

Targets

  • [ ] the case for the cure is made
  • [ ] the investment is requested and mostly deferred
  • [ ] the capacity goes another cycle unexercised
  • [ ] the muscle wastes a notch and the cure moves further out of reach

40 · plan editorial

Lean on the Fix.

Direction

Keep the relief flowing, because nothing else now works. Treat the fix as permanent infrastructure, budget for it forever, and plan around it. Do not question a dependence the whole structure rests on.

Orders

(The Habitué reaches for the fix without a second thought, before the symptom even fully forms.)

Targets

  • [ ] the fix is reached for by reflex
  • [ ] the relief is normalised as the cost of doing business
  • [ ] the wasted capacity is forgotten rather than missed
  • [ ] the dependence defends itself against being questioned

41 · plan editorial

Reach for Relief.

Direction

Stop the pain now and keep the work moving. Take the answer that fits inside the deadline, which is the fast one, and mean to start the real cure later, once there is room. There never is, but the intention is honest.

Orders

(The Pressed takes the quick fix gratefully and gets back to the work.)

Targets

  • [ ] the symptom is met with the fastest answer to hand
  • [ ] the pain stops and the work resumes
  • [ ] the fundamental fix is deferred to a calmer day
  • [ ] the deferral feels like coping, not like a choice

42 · plan editorial

Supply the Fix.

Direction

Answer the alarm and make the symptom go, fast and reliably. Be the one who ends the crisis, take the thanks, and stand ready for the next flare. Relief is what is asked, and relief is what pays.

Orders

(The Reliever applies the quick fix, ends the crisis, and is visibly credited.)

Targets

  • [ ] the alarm is answered fast
  • [ ] the symptom is gone and the rescue is credited
  • [ ] the reliance the relief creates is charged to no one
  • [ ] the next flare is a little more certain to come

43 · plan editorial

Wean and Invest.

Direction

Fund the slow capacity and ration the quick fix. Protect the cure from the pull of the next alarm, wean the system off the relief on a schedule the flares will fight, and bear the symptom long enough for the muscle to come back. Take the hit now to stop taking it forever.

Orders

(The Weaner funds the fundamental fix, rations the relief, and holds the line through the flare.)

Targets

  • [ ] the fundamental capacity is funded and protected
  • [ ] the quick fix is rationed against the pull of the alarm
  • [ ] the symptom flares unrelieved while the cure rebuilds
  • [ ] the burden shifts back, unless one hard flare undoes the wean

44 · reference warrant

Line Of Work.

Staging the shifting-the-burden archetype as a systemic system: a symptom met by a fast symptomatic solution that relieves it and, by relieving it, lets the slow fundamental capacity waste, so reliance on the fix grows until the cause can no longer be reached. The play models the documented mechanics, the symptom that demands relief now, the quick fix that acts fast and addresses nothing, the fundamental fix that acts slowly on the cause, the delay that makes the quick fix win, the side effect by which using the fix atrophies the fundamental capacity, the dependence that deepens each cycle, and the weaning that alone shifts the burden back at a cost, as the load-bearing vectors of the structure, not as a tale of laziness. The governing finding of the source literature is the play's governing law: a symptomatic solution that eases the pressure for a fundamental one erodes the capability to apply it, so each use of the fix makes the next use more necessary, and the burden shifts from solving the problem to sustaining the relief.

The phenomenon in practice, and the research spine beneath it.

Source Key Work / Event Scope
Senge "The Fifth Discipline" (1990), the Shifting the Burden and Fixes that Fail archetypes The archetype and the name: a symptomatic solution relieves the symptom and undermines the fundamental one, so dependence on the fix grows. The play's spine. The Quick Fix, the Atrophy.
Forrester "Industrial Dynamics" (1961); "Urban Dynamics" (1969) System dynamics: stocks, flows, and delays, and the counter-intuitive behaviour of feedback systems where the intuitive fix worsens the problem over time. The Delay.
Meadows "Thinking in Systems: A Primer" (2008); "Places to Intervene in a System" (1999) Shifting the burden to the intervenor, the addiction structure: an outside fix that erodes the system's own capacity to self-correct, until it cannot function without the intervenor. The Dependence.
Repenning & Sterman "Nobody Ever Gets Credit for Fixing Problems that Never Happened", California Management Review (2001) The capability trap: firefighting is visible and rewarded, capability-building is invisible and starved, so organisations tilt toward the quick fix and erode the capacity to prevent. Why the fix keeps winning.
Sterman "Business Dynamics: Systems Thinking and Modeling for a Complex World" (2000) The formal account: the balancing loops of the two solutions and the reinforcing loop of dependence, modelled, and why delay and erosion lock the system onto the symptomatic path.
Practitioner painkillers over the cure; consultants over in-house skill; firefighting over prevention; debt and technical debt over reform The archetype in the field, and its cost: relief bought now against a capacity spent later, and the withdrawal that rebuilding the capacity requires. The Alarm, the Dispensary, the Weaning.

Restrictions.

What the house refuses to model, and how it credits what it stages.

  • No villains: the elements are reduced to load-bearing vectors. The play refuses to cast the pressed hand as lazy or the reliever as a pusher, because the source finding is precisely that neither is needed: relieving a live symptom now is responsible, and the fundamental fix really is slower and its reward really is far. The misfit is that the reasonable relief is what wastes the capacity to cure, so a chain of sensible reliefs is an addiction.
  • No hero: the play refuses to resolve the misfit into willpower arriving to cure the cause. The burden shifts back only by funding the slow capacity and enduring the symptom while it rebuilds, a withdrawal that hurts and shows no result for a long time, so the reckoning is relief given up for a cure not yet arrived, not a system that healed the moment it meant to.
  • Credit, not claim: the research above is other people's work, packaged and attributed here, never claimed as the house's. The staging is the house's; the archetype, the system-dynamics account, and the capability-trap evidence are theirs, and the condition the structure actually requires, a symptomatic solution whose use erodes the fundamental capacity, is carried as carefully as the finding itself.

Source to constraint, per element.

  • The Symptom: carries the problem pressure (Senge), the visible pain that demands an answer now and does not care which one.
  • The Quick Fix: carries the symptomatic solution (Senge), fast relief that eases the symptom and leaves the cause untouched.
  • The Fundamental Fix: carries the fundamental solution and the capacity to apply it (Senge; Repenning & Sterman), the slow cure that addresses the cause and must be built and kept.
  • The Delay: carries the timing asymmetry (Forrester; Sterman), the lag that makes the fundamental fix lose every race to the quick one.
  • The Atrophy: carries the side effect (Senge; Repenning & Sterman), the fundamental capacity wasting from disuse each cycle the quick fix is chosen instead.
  • The Dependence: carries the addiction structure (Meadows), reliance on the fix deepening as the capacity shrinks, until the relief is no longer a choice.
  • The Shifting Burden: carries the archetype whole (Senge; Meadows), the load moving from curing the cause to sustaining the relief, and its remedy in weaning, held whole by nobody.
