Synopsis.
Name
The Filter Bubble. You open the feed, and it is wonderful: everything in it is interesting to you, agrees with you, speaks your language, because you clicked the things you liked and scrolled past the things you did not, and the feed learned. Every choice was reasonable, every next thing a shade more agreeable than the last ... and slowly the feed became a mirror. The views you disagree with stopped appearing, not because anyone banned them but because you never clicked them and so it stopped offering them, and now you see only what confirms you, among people who see the same, all nodding, all sure, all drifting a little further out. A medium built to give each of us exactly what we want has given us a world where no two of us see the same thing, and the common ground where we might have argued has quietly gone.
Arc
The bend is this: giving each person exactly the content they prefer is a service to each and a fragmentation of all, and the pleasanter the feed the narrower the world it leaves you. It runs on a preference met by a personaliser. People lean toward what agrees with them: it is easier, warmer, less friction to read the congenial than the challenging, and each choice to click the one and skip the other is small and reasonable. A feed built to hold attention reads those choices and gives you more of what you lingered on, so the medium and the appetite pull the same way, each click teaching it to show more like the click and fewer of the rest. And the narrowing compounds. What you do not click, it stops offering, so the opposing view does not lose an argument, it simply disappears, filtered out unremarked, and with it the friction that might have moved you. Sealed among the agreeable, you meet only confirmation, and a room of the like-minded talking only to each other does not sit still: it hardens and drifts, each voice echoed back louder, the group sliding to the edge and calling the edge the centre. Multiply that by every enclave and the shared public square fractures into a thousand private ones, each certain, each unheard by the rest, the common ground on which a disagreement could be had quietly dissolved. None of it is malice or folly. Preferring the agreeable is human, giving people what they want is what a good service does, no one is lied to and nothing is banned, and each click is harmless on its own: the fragmentation is authored by no censor and emerges from the sum of reasonable choices met by a system built to satisfy them. What is a kindness to each reader is, in aggregate, the loss of the common world. Break the bubble, seed the feed with the unchosen and the disagreeable, keep public squares where strangers meet what they did not pick, and the range can be held open: but serendipity is friction, and friction is what the reader clicks away from and the feed is built to remove, so diversity costs the comfort and the attention the whole system runs on, is resisted by the very people it would serve, and forced too hard can harden the divide it meant to heal, so the open world is bought against the preference of each and the design of the medium at once.
Stakes
Whether a medium can give each person what they want and still leave them a world in common. Every plot but the last moves the same way: toward the agreeable, which each reader is right to prefer and all are fragmented by preferring, and away from the serendipity, which would keep the world in common and which is exactly the friction the reader clicks off and the feed is built to strip. The production cannot make the personalised feed widen the reader's world, because the feed is built to give more of what was chosen and less of what was not, so the narrowing is the service working, not failing. It can only show that no one lied or banned, that preferring the congenial is human and giving people what they want is good service and each click is harmless, and that the one thing that keeps the common ground, exposure to the unchosen, costs the comfort and attention the whole medium runs on and is resisted by the very readers it would serve, so the feed is pleasant and the world is fractured and the square where we might have met is the thing quietly filtered away.
