Synopsis.
Name
The Hollow Word. There is a word, and once it named something real: a definite practice, a thing a field did, particular and checkable, so that to say the word was to point at the practice and be understood to point at it. And the word is good, so the field uses it, again and again, in meetings and job posts and reviews and hallways, each speaker saying it in good faith and meaning roughly what they inherited, the sense they picked up from the speakers before them. And here is the thing about a word in heavy use: it does not carry its referent stapled to it, it carries only the sense its speakers supply, and that sense is passed hand to hand, each speaker slightly further from the practice than the last, none of them wrong, each meaning about what the room means. And use wears it. Not through any one speaker's error but through the sheer traffic of the word across many mouths over time, the referent slips: the practice changes, or the practice goes, or the field starts doing something else and keeps the old name for it, because the name is comfortable and shared and no one wants to be the one who stops to ask what exactly it points at now. And the word stays in currency, taken at face value, accepted as coin, while the content drains out of it, so the word comes to cover more and more loosely, then to cover nothing in particular, then, at the far end, to cover its own opposite, the field saying "ownership" while it centralises and "agile" while it locks the plan and "accountability" while it diffuses the blame, each speaker sincere, the term worn to a token. And the newcomer arrives and learns the word, and learns it already hollow, without ever seeing the practice it named, because the practice is gone and only the word remains, so the newcomer inherits the token and not the thing, means by it what the field now means, which is roughly nothing definite, and passes it on, sealing the drift, one more speaker keeping the currency alive over an absent referent. And it holds, because everyone still understands the word the same amount, which is to say approximately and comfortably, the shared vagueness feeling exactly like shared meaning, and the field coordinates on the emptied term, speaking the old language and doing the new thing, and no merge ever brings the word and its referent together to show they have parted, because words are not checked against referents in the ordinary course of speaking. Nobody hollowed it. Nobody lied. Each speaker used the word in good faith, meaning what they inherited; the practice changed for reasons of its own; the newcomer learned honestly what there was to learn. It is only that a living word in constant use is bleached of its content by the very use that keeps it alive, and a field that shares a word feels it shares a meaning, so the currency the field trusts is trusted precisely because it is smooth and old and everyone says it, and the referent it once carried departed without a mark, leaving the word full of nothing and passed on as if full.
Arc
The bend is this: a word in heavy use is bleached of its referent by the use itself, and because the currency stays good and the field still says it the same, the word keeps circulating over an absent or inverted practice, the field speaking the old language while doing the new thing, and no one marks where the two parted. It runs on a word that cannot carry its own referent. A word carries not its referent but the sense its speakers supply, passed hand to hand across a field, each speaker meaning roughly what they inherited from the speakers before them (the ordinary mechanics of semantic change, meaning transmitted by use and not by definition). So the saying is sincere and not careless, and this is what makes it a trap rather than a lie, because there is no word so anchored it cannot drift, and each use is a good-faith use of the sense the speaker received. And the use itself drains the content. Through the sheer traffic of the word across many mouths over time, the sense generalises and thins, the referent slipping as the practice changes or goes, no single speaker emptying it and no one intending the loss (Traugott and Dasher, on the regularity of semantic change; Hopper and Traugott, on semantic bleaching, the loss of semantic content through repeated use). The bleaching is collective and undeliberate, authored by the language and not by any speaker, so the word thins without anyone thinning it. And the currency stays good while the content goes. The word is still accepted at face value, still taken as common coin, so the field trusts it exactly because it is smooth and old and shared, the face value outrunning the content and the trust in the coin surviving the departure of what it once bought (Bloomfield, on semantic change as a standing property of living language). The token circulates on its acceptance, not on its referent, and acceptance is all it needs to circulate. And the newcomer learns it hollow and seals the drift. Arriving after the practice has gone, the newcomer learns the word without its referent, inherits the token and means by it what the field now means, then passes it on, one more sincere speaker keeping an emptied word in currency and handing it to the next (the transmission of a bleached term to speakers who never knew its full sense). The drift is sealed not by anyone's error but by honest inheritance, the newcomer learning faithfully what there is to learn. And the word runs on to cover its opposite. At the far end the field says the old word while doing the new thing, the term worn to a token loose enough to cover the contrary of what it named, so the field speaks "ownership" while it centralises and "agile" while it fixes the plan, each speaker sincere and the coordination intact because everyone shares the vagueness (the inversion, the word coming to cover the opposite of its referent). The old language is spoken over the new practice, and the two are never brought together to show they have parted. None of it is a lie or a fault. Each speaker uses the word in good faith, meaning what they inherited; the practice changes for its own reasons; the newcomer learns honestly what there is to learn, so no one empties the word and the shared meaning was simply never re-checked. What keeps a word usable, that it is smooth and shared and needs no spelling out, is exactly what lets its content drain unremarked, and a field that shares a word feels it shares a meaning. Re-anchor the word before trusting it: insist each use cash out in a concrete referent, name the specific practice the word is standing for, and check the term against the thing rather than against the room's comfort, and the drift can be caught while the word is spoken instead of never: but this means stopping a fluent conversation to ask what exactly the word points at now, sounding like a pedant over a term everyone is happy to say, breaking a shared language the field is comfortable speaking, and treating a smooth old word as suspect precisely because it goes down easy, against every signal that the field is speaking the same tongue, so the word is anchored only by paying, continuously, the social cost of doubting a currency everyone still accepts.
Stakes
Whether a field can trust a word, when it can only share the currency and the content each supplies feels like everyone's. Every plot but the last moves the same way: toward the word still said, which each speaker is right to use and the field right to accept, and away from the referent re-anchored, which would ask each to cash the word out in a concrete practice and to doubt a currency the whole field still accepts. The production cannot make the word carry its referent, because a word smooth enough to share is worn enough to drift, and a term that feels full to its speaker feels full to every speaker who inherited a thinner sense, so the currency the field trusts is trust working as trust does over an accepted coin, not a lie: no one empties the word and every use is sincere. It can only show that the word was said in good faith and the practice changed for its own reasons and the newcomer learned honestly what there was to learn, that the currency kept the coin passing while the content drained, and that the one move that re-anchors the word, cashing each use out in a concrete referent and checking the term against the thing, must be made by paying, continuously, the social cost of doubting a word everyone still says and asking the question that reads as pedantry, so the field is fluent and each speaker sincere and the shared meaning it trusts is the one thing it no longer holds.
