Synopsis.
Name
The Streetlight Effect. The keys are lost in the dark, but the search happens under the lamp, because that is where you can see. The lit patch is easy to comb, the dark is not, so the effort flows to the light: the ground is searched not where the thing is but where the searching is cheap, and, thoroughly, honestly, in good light, the search turns up whatever the lit patch happened to hold, and calls it the answer ... while the keys lie exactly where the search declined to go.
Arc
The bend is this: the search goes where the looking is easy, not where the thing is, and then trusts what it finds. It runs on a cost gradient. The lit patch is cheap to search: the data is at hand, the method is tractable, the sample is in reach. The dark is dear, or impossible: the thing that matters is unmeasured, hard to get at, expensive to instrument. So the searcher, rational under cost, works the light, because a search you can actually run beats one you cannot. And the search under the light is real work: thorough, careful, defensible, so the diligence reads as progress, and the more of the lit patch is combed the closer the answer feels, though the answer was never there. None of it is folly. The searcher is right that the dark cannot be cheaply searched and the light can, right that some search beats none, and the light itself is honest, it really is where seeing is easy. What the search forgets, quietly, is that the ease was never evidence: the reason the keys are not under the lamp is the same reason the lamp was chosen, that it is the easy place, and the easy place is not where they fell. Search the dark where the thing actually is, or build a lamp there, instrument the unmeasured, and the search can finally look where the answer lies: but the dark may yield nothing, so insisting on it can mean no search at all, a clean tractable answer traded for a true one that will not come, and sometimes, honestly, the keys were near the light, and the patient combing of it was right.
Stakes
Whether a search ever looks where the answer is, or only ever where the answer is easy to look for. Every plot but the last moves the same way: toward the light, where the searching is cheap and the finding is clean, and away from the dark, where the thing actually lies and no easy look can reach. The production cannot make the dark cheap to search, so the cost gradient tilts every rational searcher toward the lamp, and the lamp is not where the keys fell. It can only show that no one is lazy, that searching the light is the right move when the dark cannot be searched, that the diligence is real and the finding honest and the lit patch genuinely easy to see, and that the one move that looks where the answer is, searching the dark or building a lamp there, may buy nothing at all, a true search that yields silence for a tractable one that yielded a clean, confident, misplaced result.
